Lillian Byrd is a small-time reporter with a flair for making big-time mistakes - like getting fired for fending off the boss' son with an X-Acto knife and breaking up with her girlfriend for no good reason. So her investigation into the disappearances of women in the Detroit area might not be the best idea. But when one of the missing women turns up dead and Lillian recognizes the bizarrely mutilated corpse, she's in too deep to get out. Of course it doesn't help that she's still fighting off the boss' son and ducking the aggressively amorous overtures of the roughest dyke in town. Now, after simultaneously blowing the case for the police and revealing herself to the off-kilter killers, she's completely on her own. Can she catch the murderers before they catch up with her?
Holy Hell Lillian Byrd Crime Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Elizabeth Sims Dina Pearlman Audible Studios Books
This was a great book. I can't say I enjoyed it, I like my murder mysteries a little sillier, but I couldn't put it down. I needed to get to the end to see how Lillian got out of the situation. Most characters were fleshed out and very realistic, we have all known a Lou in our life, amirite?I haven't decided if I'm going to read more in the series, I don't think my fingernails could handle it, but I definitely recommend it to people who like their mysteries a little fun and a lot dark.

Holy Hell Lillian Byrd Crime Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Elizabeth Sims Dina Pearlman Audible Studios Books Reviews
I normally steer clear of female authors and first-person perspective. I'm glad I made an exception in this case. Another reviewer said the author has a way with turning a phrase and I couldn't have said it any better. Very witty. I was pulling for our intrepid heroine until the somewhat bloody end. And her bunny.
I am familiar with Sims non fiction writing so I decided to give her mystery series a try. I enjoyed the crime and mystery. The characters were really well-done. All the insights and small details.
It was more grisly than I expected. Don't want to spoil, but this is definitely gritty crime. I like Lillian Byrd though, so I'll probably read another.
Just finished reading Holy Hell and Damn Straight by Elizabeth Sims. Can't wait to get my hands on the next two in the Lillian Byrd series and anything else by this author. I love her writing style and sense of humor. Had me laughing out loud.
I found them impossible to put down and kind of miss Lillian right now since I'm between books. I highly recommend these for a fun, fast, entertaining read!
This is a crime story and indeed a good amount of death and mayhem but the humorous main character gave the story a sense of light-hearted fun rather than a sinister or suspenseful feel. I liked the plot and characters and will be reading more of this author's books.
I purchased this book a long time ago and enjoyed it enough to track down the sequels. So when I found the free edition, I had to reread it. It's just as good 10 years later. Some books don't hold up a decade later or on the second reading, but this one did. It was just as engrossing the second time around. The cast of potential murderers was intriguing in that I wasn't sure about the rationality of some of them. Now I plan to reread the rest of the series.
This is a fast paced mystery that once I picked up, couldn't put down. The main character, Lillian Byrd, is someone with flaws who just can't seem to catch a break. She's quick to act without taking enough time to think. Lillian takes on the boss' son at the paper where she's a reporter and ends up doing freelance. However, the boss' son isn't satisfied that she lost her job and is still out to settle their differences. She stumbles upon the answer to a recent murder, but the police won't believe her and the killers know she's on to them. There's also a crazy dyke who has the hots for her and is stalking her. One thing after another happens that would keep anyone else at home in bed with a box of chocolates and a fifth of bourbon. But, Lillian is determined to get her story while staying one step ahead of those who want to take her down. There are some surprises along the way and the reason I didn't give this book five stars is because one of the best things to happen to Lillian turns out to be one of the worst things that happens in the book. It creeped me out that the author would decide to treat one of the better characters the way she did, while leaving the crazy, scary and murderous characters in tact. I like a happy ending, and while Lillian came out ok in the end, I was unnerved by this particular twist. I won't divulge it because the book is worth reading regardless. I'm planning on reading the rest of the books in the Lillian Byrd series because this book was such a good weekend read.
Holy Hell was a fantastic read and I loved that it broke so many "rules" I've read about and heard in classes cussing is the sign of a poor writer, give your protagonist a foil or mentor, avoid starting too many sentences with "I". Lillian is a fascinating, well depicted character whom I enjoyed getting to know. The time frame of the story was nicely tight, and the descriptions were dazzling without being over-extended. Many reminded me of striking a match in a dark room--things are highly illuminated and you only get a glimpse, but that little spark makes all the difference.
I'll be on to Damn Straight next!
